Interior
Cultural heritage inspires and defines the origins of American colonial architecture just as much as the limitations of building materials and the demands of the climate. Medieval English houses with exposed timber walls and thatched roofs, the default building to the first European settlers of Cape Cod Bay’s coastlines, quickly proved woefully inadequate. Environmental challenges such as easily eroded sandy soil and harsh Atlantic gales led to the refinement of a dwelling tailored to the region from which it would take its name.
